The M&P series of centerfire pistols are known for excellent ergonomics, reasonable weights, and high reliability. They are Hall of Fame choices here in TNP ranking up with Glock, Sig, XDM, CZ, Ruger, and others for as combat handgun choices for the good guys. But none are inexpensive to shoot. That means if you have chosen one for carry, your range sessions will be seldom and you probably suck at shooting it. Enter its rimfire twin, the Smith and Wesson M&P22. Wearing nearly the same ergos, the M&P is a perfect understudy gun for that M&P centerfire pistol. The light 22 oz weight is different but that is good and opens up additional POUs like backpacking. Made by Walther in Germany, the M&P22 is the most squared away new design .22 pistol I"ve seen. It is extremely accurate and reliable (shown). That's not to say it didn't choke once in awhile, but it was extremely infrequent. With this high reliability, shooting the M&P22 was extremely satisfying and recreational (shown). Everyone who shot it loved it. Quality and construction are top notch; CNC milling of the lightweight slide is perfection. Ergonomics again are excellent and in some ways better than the centerfire M&Ps: the internal hammer trigger is smooth and light. You might want to ignore the safety added for importation reasons but the sights are good and allowed for shooting a 2 inch group at 25 yards. Firepower is also standard setting at 12 rounds; funner for plinking, practice, and even the self-defense POU should you choose it. Accessory availability should be surprisingly expansive as the gun IS sized exactly like the centerfire M&P handguns. Value is good at around $380 or so but will be more expensive than some traditional .22 pistol designs like Ruger 22/45 and Browning Buckmark. But whether or not you are a M&P pistol fan, you should look at this Smith and Wesson .22 (Walther).
