The Surface tablet isn't even launched just yet and it looks like Microsoft is already working on the next version. This is what's going to get Microsoft back in the game. They've rested on their laurels long enough. A series of job ads on the Microsoft career site are saying that the company is expanding the line.
It would be ok to assume that Microsoft seemed to have a one time thing for its hardware launch, when they first unveiled the Surface. But it seems that they are not going to be content with a machine that could really give the iPad a run for its money, and market share. It also seemed that after Microsoft's tablet goes on sale, the company would just back off and let its hardware partners take over from there, like how they've always done before in the past.
But that's not going to happen. And Microsoft looks like they are serious and committed to enhancing and expanding the Surface line. They've already posted 13 positions related to the "Surface team" since June 18. Jobs advertised include a senior hardware engineer, senior component engineer, electrical engineer and mechanical engineer. Here's how the ad begins:
Are you passionate about building cool devices and technologies? The Surface Team focuses on lighting up Microsoft experiences with touch first computing. A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want, and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you.
