iMore reports that Apple will announce the new iPhone and iPad Mini on September 12, for a release on the 21st. Apple has repeatedly cited the next gen iPhone rumors as being the reason for the iPhone 4S sales falling short last quarter, so the sooner the product hits the shelves, the better.

What we know so far is that the phone will most likely be stretched out with a 4 inch screen and a smaller dock connector. Details about leaked components have ranged from leaked parts to fully assembled units. Do you think we'll be seeing something similar?

The full announcement list will reportedly include the iPhone, the iPad Mini and a new iPod Nano, with iOS 6 most likely.

iMore is also hearing that the iPad Mini is essentially a 7-point-something-inch version of the current iPad, and the new iPhone will have a 4-inch, 16:9 ratio screen.

Update:All Things D is now reporting that it has confirmed iMore's previous report that Apple is planning an event for the week of September 12.

Update 2: NY Times agrees, going so far as to confirm the September 12th announcement date (although it only confirms an iPhone announcement, with no mention of an iPad Mini).
