Could social media actually be doing more harm than good when it comes to personal well being? A small study from the University of Salford in the UK says yes.
Half of the survey's 298 participants, all of whom identified themselves as social media users say that their use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter makes their lives worse. Participants noted that their self esteem suffers when they compare their own accomplishments to those of their online friends.
Two thirds claim they find it difficult to relax or sleep after spending time on social networks, and a quarter cited work or relationship difficulties due to online confrontations. More than half say they feel "worried or uncomfortable" at times they were unable to access their Facebook or email accounts.
What do you think? Do you feel the same about social media as the survey's respondents do? Could social media actually be doing more harm to our self esteem?
